BOULDERING

bouldering.JPG

Bouldering is the activity of climbing on large rocks and started at the beginning of the seventies.  Other terms used to identify this activity are “stoning” and “boulder climbing”.  The name derives from the English word “boulder”, that is a large rock of different dimensions which offers sides on which you can climb.

Bouldering consists of climbing up to a maximum of about 5-6 metres and working out a particular sequence of linked, dynamic movements. The movements are normally few (8-10), but very difficult. Climbs that go over 5-6 metres are to be considered as dangerous free solo.

The geomorphologic conformation of Meschia. The presence of natural handholds and rests and a limited height make it ideal for this discipline. The area involved has been compared to the zone of Fontainebleau near Paris, where there is a forest of particular beauty. It was at Fontainebleau, at the start of the XX century, that the first climbs on rocks took place. Soon it became a discipline in itself with a large number of rock climbers specialising in this type of climb and leading to world championships. The discovery and promotion of Meschia as one of the biggest “boulder” areas in Italy is due to Mauro Calibani, one of the best climbers and who comes from Ascoli.

Another area involved is in the Borough of Montegallo between Interprete and Casale Nuovo, in the area called Sasso dell’eco (the echoing stone). Here there are sandstone rocks which are particularly suitable for this sport.
