THE CARTER

The open road attracted the carters with their carts which they used to transport goods in place of the donkey’s harness and men’s shoulders. The carter’s life was very strenuous, above all in winter with the cold, the snow and the rain.  He got up at dawn and returned in the evening, tired, often climbing up the slope on foot so as not to make the horses even more tired than they were already.  Once he arrived he had to see to the horse that was hungry and sweaty.  During the walk there were also obligatory stops to water the horses and cool one’s face and aching hands if it was summer.Today the carter no longer exists, the car engine has replaced the horses and the steering wheel the reigns.
