COAT OF ARMS

In the original statute to be found in the town archives, on sheet 34, book II at the bottom, there are three different drawings in ink of the arms.  The first reproduces the five hills with five chestnut plants; the second five hills with one chestnut tree between the second and third hills; the third five hills with one chestnut tree planted on the highest hill; this final one is the definitive coat of arms.  These three drawings probably show the different possibilities put forward by whoever received the task of preparing the design for the final draft. However, other variants exist.  The oil on canvas version of the coat of arms to be found in the Town Hall shows two branches crossed, one of oak and the other of laurel at the bottom; another, again in the Town Hall, carries the wording “Frangar non flectar”. And this does not seem to be an isolated episode: in the Town Hall there is a bronze pistil that was once used to work gunpowder, the only one left of several examples that have by now been lost   Above it the motto is clearly carried.Another variant: “………a star and a lily, set in a sky-blue field, framed by an oak branch and a laurel branch and crowned by a cross……”And one more: above the arms a turreted crown with ghibelline merlons, maybe as a reminder of the presence of Carlo Baroncelli.A coat of arms that, to tell the truth is contradictory; yet it satisfactorily shows the difficulties and uncertainties of the times and the vicissitudes endured by this community. Now, though, the official coat of arms should be this last one, representing the synthesis of this land’s unique characteristics: the chestnut tree that has fed the population for centuries, the five hills that, like the seven hills of Rome, show the possession and the definitive conquest of the current territory, the lily as a constant  political choice of Castignano, the Star indicates the number of administrators, then the turreted crown and the writing: a writing that testifies to the courage of one’s own ideas, the tenacious defence of one’s own freedom, but above all, character.Taken from “the very magnificent community of Castignano” by Guerriero Carosi Ed. Il Segno Negrar
