OSOLI

Geographically Osoli represented and represents a nerve centre in the middle of the borough’s territory; from Osoli the radial roads branch off that allows other places to be reached in all directions.

Church of SS. Giovanni and Martino

Its origins are unknown but, its position and orientation lead one to believe that its origins are Benedictine.  Clearly the original structure has undergone profound changes as a result of restoration work carried out over the centuries. The structure of small dimensions is entirely in sandstone with both the apse and bell gable, where two old bells are preserved, exposed to the east.

Some of the elders of the place have it that the bells were opportunely tied to oak trees to hide them from the sight of brigands.  The monks used them on several occasions to signal the arrival of these brigands; at their ringing, the inhabitants of the place ran to take refuge within the castle of Osoli.

More than once this old village was sacked by bands of brigands headed by Pelagallo, cousin of the brigand Giovanni Piccioni. These two managed to communicate between one another positioning themselves on the highest hills and using little mirrors that reflected the sunlight.  It emerges from some written sources that in the territory of Roccafluvione the first wave of bandits came along between 1580 and 1592; at that time Pope Sisto V and later Pope Clemente VII ordered them to be hunted down, organising an outpost of soldiers to defend the area.
