PALIO DELL'ADDOLORATA
The Palio re-evokes the chasing away of the tyrant Boffo da Massa from the free town of Castignano in 1387.The spectacle takes place in the old town and people dressed in clothes of the period belonging to the districts of S. Martino-Rufiano, S. Egidio, S. Venanzo, S. Maria del Borgo, Castiglioni-Filette, S. Pietro and Crocifisso take part , as well as the Podestà (medieval Mayor) and his Lady, the Consuls, the Councillors and the Notaries.The re-enactment sees the Offering of Candles by the Mayor to our Lady of Sorrows, the co-patron of the town, the procession of the Arts (blacksmiths, yokels, carpenters, bakers, butchers, millers, shoemakers) and finally the Tournament of the Ring. This is a tournament on horseback in which the rider must thread a series of ever-decreasing rings placed along the route onto his sword.
