PREHISTORY

Prehistory in Acquasanta is attested to by two finds: the first was by Guglielmo Allevi of Offida who lived in the late 1800s. He made numerous discoveries behind the Rio Secco stream, a tributary of the River Garrafo. Of these findings, carefully described in the scholar's work, there is unfortunately no trace. It is hypothesized that Allevi himself removed them and took them to the museum of Prehistory in his town, Offida, where similar remains are held.  The scientist claimed to have gone to Umito, to the Rio Secco area full of caves, at the suggestion of Agostino De Micheli from Pozza and to have found stone weapons and terracotta objects from the Paleolithic period. The second discovery was made in March 1877, on land belonging to Angelo Panichi in the vicinity of Carpineto. The remains of three human skeletons belonging to two adults and a child were found in the tombs cut into the rock, as well as objects of different materials. Terracotta remains included funeral pots fragments with graffiti, filled with red earth.Iron findings included weapons, a hatchet, a club and fragments of spears, knives and swords. In bronze there were two 20 cm diameter vases with curved handles for mixing water and wine, buckles, arm bands, a belt buckle, some pendants and a boar's tooth bound with copper wire. The remains of this discovery, like those found by Allevi, have not been preserved.
