SCALELLE
Scalelle is a small centre that was mainly formed in the XIV century The town is safely placed on a rocky spur with a particular conformation of horizontal strata, from which its place name derives.

Church of Santa Maria Assunta

The well-known Church of Santa Maria Assunta is far outside the centre, at about 750 metres above sea level on the top of a hill, from which Monte Castellano can be seen as well as the village of Sala.  From the tower you can see the Salaria and Acquasanta Terme.

The architectonic structure of the Church is quite imposing.

Inside, a large round arch divides the presbytery from the assembly room and above the 1700 altar, in a richly frescoed niche, could once be seen the image of a XV century Virgin in terracotta (unfortunately now stolen).

The retouching of the 30s has probably covered up many of the frescoes that would have extended over a large part of the walls of the assembly room. In 1580 the church was dedicated to “Sanctae Mariae”, and later on “sive de Scalellis” was added. The bells of the church were recast in 1928 by Don Felice Piotti.
