STONEBREAKER

In the territory of Acquasanta the roads, as yet untouched by asphalt, were covered here and there with loose stones. These were often damaged by the passing carts, people’s shoes or the iron horseshoes that the animals were shod with.At the side of the road in those days you could find the stone hewer, a poor man intent on breaking stones with a big hammer. it was common to see him working in the summer sun with a leafy branch fixed upright to afford him some shade.
