THE RIVER GARRAFO The Garrafo is a tributary of the River Tronto. The modelling of the river appears to be of a fluvial nature with steep slopes affected by erosive and landslide phenomena. These slopes have been cut in a marine sedimentary sequence made up of marl, clay and sandstone which accumulated during the Miocene period, until about five million years ago.In the course of the Quaternary the fluvial valley has cut away almost completely the Miocene land and in some places the incision of the valley has reached the roof of the Umbrian-Marchigian limestone sequence, consisting of more than 2000 m. of siliceous limestone land.
