TRAVERTINE Travertine is a sedimentary rock of chemical origin having a continental face and carbonic nature due to the precipitation of calcium carbonate from water containing bicarbonate as a result of the loss of carbon dioxide, released by the increased pressure and temperature. The carbon dioxide contained in the ground comes into contact with water and forms carbonic acid HCO3.Carbonic acid transforms the insoluble calcium carbonate to soluble calcium bicarbonate:

H2O + CO2 + H2CO3  ↔ CaCO3 + H2CO3 + Ca (CO3H)2

water + Carbon dioxide + Carbonic Acid ↔ Calcite + Carbonic Acid  + Calcium Bicarbonate

As we know, bicarbonate is soluble and therefore removable and transportable in a form dissociated from water.
