THE WEAVER Every house in the mountains had a loom. Some women were weavers for a living, but for the most part every woman wove, by herself, the cloth for her trousseau or for clothes. What’s more, the women, especially the younger ones, wove the famous “bindelle” on little handlooms. These were strong cotton laces for the corsets that were fashionable at the time, to pull in the waist and tighten until they stopped your breathing. In winter they spun the canapé or wool fibres using saliva, in spring they wove and in summer they whitened the cloth on the banks of the Tronto.Once the cloth had been woven it was laid in the dark, heavy walnut chests, to await whitening and sewing, three cloths for each sheet. The job of whitening was much respected, as is shown by the fact that during the work for the construction of the new thermal spa Giosafatti set aside a space on the river bank for the “poor women who have to treat cloth”. Once it had been whitened, the cloth was dried in the summer sun.Bibliography
