CASALE VECCHIO

In ancient times it seems that it did not stand where it does today and that it was more populated.  In the church of the old town, it too now ruined, a chapel was erected and patronised by the family Sacconi of Montalto.The church was dedicated to S. Maria della Neve.  It had not long been built in 1580, reading the register of the visit of Mons. Aragona: “ecclesia haec denuo contructa est etc.”: the town in that year numbered 23 families.

The town was completely destroyed in February 1934 when an avalanche fell on the houses.  The story is told that the only house that was saved was holding a wake for a little girl who had died, with all the inhabitants of the place present.  That little angel saved the whole village, avoiding a tragedy.  Eight people died in the misfortune:

  1. Gabriotti or Capriotti Antonio di Enrico;
  2. Gabriotti or Capriotti Carolina;
  3. Gabriotti or Capriotti Giuseppina;
  4. Fani Angelo Antonio late Francesco;
  5. Fani Prasside of Angelo Antonio;
  6. Pacetti Demo late Domenico;
  7. Pacetti Francesco of Federico;
  8. Di Marcello Vincenzo of Raffaele.

The village was rebuilt in another place with the name of Casale Nuovo.
